The Techiman Divisional Police Command in the Bono East region narrowly escaped being set ablaze on Sunday, as irate supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) stormed the premises during the collation of the Techiman South constituency election results.
The chaos erupted after NDC supporters accused officials of the Electoral Commission (EC) of foul play in the collation process. Claiming their parliamentary candidate, Christopher Beyere Basongti, had already secured victory, the protesters demanded an immediate declaration in his favor.
Violence ensued as the youth invaded the collation room, seized and destroyed pink sheets, and disrupted the process entirely. Electoral materials parked at the forecourt of the police station were also set on fire, escalating tensions in the area.
Despite the violent outburst, NDC supporters have taken to the principal streets of Techiman to jubilate, asserting victory for their candidate. The party has yet to provide official proof of its claims, as the EC has not declared a winner for the parliamentary seat.
Local authorities and security forces have called for calm as investigations into the incident continue. The Electoral Commission is yet to issue a statement regarding the events at Techiman South.
