The 2024 Presidential Candidate of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama has promised to construct Astroturf pitches in districts without quality football facilities.
According to him, the move is aimed at improving sports infrastructure and providing better opportunities for young talents.
Addressing rally attendees during an engagement at Abuakwa in Atwima Nwabeigya South Constituency, Mr. Mahama asserted that such projects were going to be a game-changer capable of improving the lives of the youth.
“This government has constructed Astroturf pitches in many places of the country. However, there are some districts that have been abandoned. So I have said that because we want our youth to be involved in sports or football or any activity that can change their destinies, we will build these Astroturf pitches in Abuakwa Atwima Nwabeigya and other districts that have been left out of the development project by government,” he said on his campaign tour of the Ashanti Region.
The Akufo-Addo government first introduced the policy of constructing Astroturf fields in communities across the country under the pledge ‘One Constituency One Astroturf’. The government’s performance tracker website claim that 106 of such facilities were constructed from 2017 to 2023.
Many communities have complained about many of those ultra-modern fields that have fallen into disrepair as a result of lack of maintenance.
