Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has acknowledged that no political party can govern Ghana perfectly, citing the inevitability of mistakes in implementing policies.
His comments come on the heels of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) defeat in the 2024 elections, with many Ghanaians criticising the party’s governance.
Speaking on the floor of parliament, Afenyo-Markin conceded that the NPP made mistakes and couldn’t do everything perfectly, accepting the people’s verdict.
However, he also hinted at holding the incoming administration accountable, stating that the NPP will “reveal the true colours” of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the coming days and years.
The NPP’s defeat has prompted the party to reflect on its shortcomings, with Afenyo-Markin expressing confidence that the party will return to power in 2028.
He emphasised the NPP’s commitment to self-assessment, strategic planning, and constructive opposition to win back the trust of Ghanaians.
“Indeed, no party can run a perfect government in this country. When you get into parliament, while you are happy to implement your policies, you are likely to make some mistakes. We concede that some mistakes were made, we concede that we couldn’t have done everything perfect. The people have spoke and we’ve accepted. But Mr. Speaker, the coming days and years, we’ll reveal the true colours of this umbrella, and the elephant will be watching keenly.”
