The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced plans to conduct a thorough audit of ballot booklets set for destruction in the Western and Eastern Regions of Ghana.
This move follows concerns over potential electoral malpractice after the Electoral Commission (EC) ordered the recall and reprinting of ballot papers for these regions due to a leakage of the original ballots.
Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, the NDC’s Director of Elections and IT, expressed a lack of trust in the Electoral Commission’s handling of the situation.
In a Facebook post, he clearly stated that the party would not allow the destruction of the ballot booklets without rigorous scrutiny.
Emphasising the need for transparency in managing the electoral materials, Dr. Boamah raised concerns about the large volume of ballots involved, stating that it would be impractical for the destruction process to proceed as initially planned.
He further warned of the potential for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to exploit the situation for ballot stuffing, suggesting that thousands of ballots may have already been leaked to the NPP for political gain.
Dr. Boamah called on the EC to ensure heightened vigilance and transparency in order to restore public trust in the electoral process.
