Dr. Sammy Ayeh, the NDC Spokesperson on Youth Development, has accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of gross mismanagement in Ghana’s energy sector. Speaking on Ghone TV during an interview with Lantam Papanko, he highlighted extensive financial losses and inefficiencies during the NPP’s tenure.
According to Dr. Ayeh, the NPP inherited a robust energy sector from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) but squandered the resources, plunging key institutions like GRIDCo and ECG into financial crises. “In 2016, GRIDCo made a profit of 14 million Ghana cedis, but by 2018, under the NPP, they recorded a loss of 600 million Ghana cedis,” he noted.
Dr. Ayeh further criticized the NPP for misusing funds allocated to the energy sector, such as the Energy Sector Levy Act (ESLA), which he claimed had been wasted, forcing the government to purchase fuel on credit. He compared this to the NDC’s achievements, citing the establishment of a 120-million-standard-cubic-feet gas plant to enhance power generation.
The NDC spokesperson also lauded former President John Dramani Mahama’s leadership in resolving energy challenges. He shared an example of Mahama securing light crude oil from Nigeria within hours, attributing it to the former president’s credibility and strong diplomatic ties.
“This demonstrates the trust and confidence President Mahama commands. His leadership will restore hope and stability to Ghana’s energy sector,” Dr. Ayeh concluded.
