New Tafo District Court in Eastern Region has sentenced a 30-year-old self-proclaimed fetish priest, Mohammed Alhassan, to 18 months imprisonment for defrauding a miner.
Presenting the case, the prosecutor, Chief Inspector Barnabas Mends, explained that the complainant, a 27-year-old miner from Osino, met the accused in November 2024.
During their interaction, the miner disclosed his occupation.
The fetish priest then told the complainant he could perform rituals for him to acquire large quantities of gold from his mining site.
He demanded GHC 5,000 in cash and gold worth GHC 19,200 to initiate the process to perform some rituals .
After receiving the money and gold, the accused handed the miner a doll, warning him not to open it or risk going mad.
Realizing he had been defrauded, the complainant reported the matter to the police, leading to the fetish priest’s arrest.
He pleaded guilty and convicted on his own plea to 18 months imprisonment.
Meanwhile, the convict is also standing trial in another case of defrauding a Spain-based businessman of GHC 200,000 and gold worth GHC 122,000.
