The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has rejected claims circulating on social media that Customs officers at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) extorted money from a returning traveller who paid GH¢12,690.63 in duties on mobile phones and accessories.
According to the Authority, the traveller arrived on 5 December with 18 mobile phones and several accessories—items classified as commercial quantity under the Exemptions Act, 2022 (Act 1083).
Since the goods were not declared on arrival, Customs processed them through the ICUMS platform and issued an official Bill of Entry and receipt.
GRA, in a statement on Thursday, December 11, clarified that the online allegations do not reflect what actually happened.
“The information currently circulating on social media regarding this incident is inaccurate,” the Authority stated. It added that the traveller was not detained, and no item was seized.
The Authority maintained that its officers acted strictly within the law. It stressed that the same procedure applies to all passengers carrying goods beyond personal concessions.
GRA encouraged travellers to voluntarily declare items on arrival to avoid misunderstandings. It further urged passengers with concerns to contact Customs officers directly at the airport.
