Kwame Agbodza, the Minister-designate for Roads and Highways, has disclosed that the interest on the country’s road debt, initially pegged at GH¢113 million, has escalated to a staggering GH¢665 million.
Agbodza also disclosed that the government is leaving behind a minimum of GH¢113 billion in commitments, with GH¢20 billion of that being unpaid certificates.
The interest on this debt is particularly concerning due to the nature of the contracts.
However, the most alarming figure, according to Agbodza, is the interest on the GH¢113 million road debt, which has ballooned to GH¢665 million due to the nature of the contracts.
He emphasized the urgency of addressing the situation, noting, “At the transition committee as of today, the NPP government is leaving a minimum of GH¢113 billion commitments. What we should be worried about though is that in that same document, they are saying that certificate unpaid as of today from the Government of Ghana amounts to about 20 billion and more worrying is that the interest on this GH¢113 is GH¢665m due to the nature of the contracts.”
The Minister-designate stressed the need for immediate attention to these financial burdens as they pose significant challenges to the country’s infrastructure development.
