Fire has gutted parts of the Sekondi Market in the Western region.

According to an eyewitness, several shops with goods running into thousands of Ghana cedis have been destroyed in the fire outbreak.

A security man on duty Kwesi Amissah who spoke to Starr News’ Western region correspondent Emmanuel Ohene Gyan said the fire was caused by a power outage which occurred around 3am.

According to Amissah, a corn mill operator within the old market failed to put his machine off after the day’s work. The corn mill machine reportedly caught fire after the power came back on, spreading to other shops.

The timely intervention of personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service managed to prevent the fire spreading to other shops.

Some of the victims affected by the fire are appealing for support.
