Ghana’s female relay team has withdrawn their participation in the IAAF World Relay Championship which is scheduled to come off in the Bahamas from April 22-23 due to financial constraints.
Team Ghana was expected to compete in the 4x100m for the first time among other forty-two African countries in Nassau and was going into the competition with a ranking of 11th.
This opportunity was to secure qualification for the London World Championship but this development comes as a blow to the President of the Ghana Athletics Association, Professor Francis Dodoo.
“We have missed it and I taught we would have had a good shot at this year’s event but that is gone. So for now they will have to take the longer rout to qualify to the event.
“They will have to race and race and if they don’t make the automatic eight, but till the cut off time is made. I taught that with about $20,000 we would have made it to the event in Bahamas,” he told Starr Sports
This year’s programme will consist of five events over four relay disciplines: the 4x100m, 4x200m, 4x400m and 4x800m for both men and women, and a mixed 4x400m which will cap the competition’s second day.
