An Accra Circuit Court has granted bail to the two Russians and two Ukrainians arrested in the Ashanti region for engaging in illegal mining.

They were granted bail to the tune of GH¢200, 000 each with one surety who must be a Ghanaian.

They were said to have mined 500 acres of land instead of the 75 acres originally sanctioned by the Lands Commission at Tontokrom in the Amansie West District.

The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources ordered their arrest when he toured some mining sites in the region in May.

But, according to the Judge, he was forced to grant the four who are managers of Geo Professional Services bail owing to the substantive application before him.

Background

In May, Mr. Amewu ordered the arrest of the four for engaging in illegal mining activities in the country.

He also ordered  for their company Geo Professional Services to be  shut down with immediate effect.

Their  firm, according to him, was found to be operating illegally by his team which is touring illegal mining sites in the Ashanti region.

The firm is said to have mined  500 acres of land instead of 75 acres originally permitted them by the Minerals Commission at Tontokrom in the Amansie West District.

The mining company was issued with the “stop work order” by the Inspection Directorate of the Minerals Commission on May 18, but disregarded directives and continued mining.
