President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has said witch-hunting is not part of the mandate of the Special Prosecutor’s office his administration intends establishing soon.
He said the core dictate of the office is to ensure accountability and weed out corruption.
“We will enhance accountability in our public life,” President Akufo-Addo said during a lecture at the Konrad Adenaeur Foundation’s Academy in Germany Tuesday.
According to him, “corruption has become the bane of our nation’s progress” and it is his goal to eradicate it.
He stressed that the Special Prosecutor’s office will be used to fight corruption devoid of political harassment.
“We will establish this year, by an Act of Parliament, an Office of Special Prosecutor, who, independently of the Executive and with a statutorily provided security of tenure, will have the responsibility to investigate and prosecute acts of corruption, free from predictable claims of witch-hunting,” Akufo-Addo promised.
He said corruption can no longer be eradicated by word of mouth.
“Words can no longer defeat the canker of corruption. Concrete actions must. Public service is just that, public service, not an avenue for personal enrichment.”
