The outgoing British High Commissioner Jon Benjamin has stated that West Africa still remains an attractive route for drug traffickers.

According to him, drug traffickers from South America prefer to traffic their drugs to Europe through West Africa due to the perceived weak security in the sub-region.

In an interview on Okay FM Wednesday, Mr. Benjamin said though the security situation at the Kotoka International Airport has improved a lot could be done to beef it up.

“When safekeeping conditions are improved, it will go a long way to dissuade drug barons from seeing Kotoka International Airport as a safe route to transport narcotic drugs to Europe,” he said.

The controversial diplomat added “It will not be prudent to put out top security intelligence in the public domain, but I can commend the Government of Ghana for collaborating well with the U.K. Government in the fight against drug trafficking”, Benjamin stated.

Mr. Benjamin’s tenure as the High Commissioner for Ghana comes to an end in July this year. He will be replaced by Ian Walker who takes over in August 2017.
