Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has announced government’s intentions to construct a new psychiatric hospital in Accra.

He made this known at a forum organized by the Institute of Democratic Governance on Ghana-China relations.

“China also very kindly gave Ghana a grant, and part of the grant money will be used for the construction of a new Accra Psychiatric Hospital,” the vice president revealed.

“They also gave us an additional fifty million Renminbi to enable Government of Ghana improve living conditions of the military,” Dr. Bawumia added.

Meanwhile, Ghana’s Chief Psychiatrist Dr. Akwesi Osei has been lamenting over the deplorable state of mental facilities in the country.

Dr. Osei also identified “lack of funds, shortage of operational materials and drugs” as some of the challenges hampering effective provision of mental care in the country.

The facilities need over Gh¢4 million to operate effectively.
