Leading network provider, MTN Ghana, has launched its mobile money month (MoMo), with a call on subscribers to be extra-vigilant about fraudsters who try to take undue advantage of the system.

With over 6.2 million active “MoMo” users and 75,000 agents nationwide, MTN has admonished its customers to report any questionable characters.

Speaking to Ultimate Business in Kumasi, Mobile Money Manager for Corporate Business Development at MTN, Abdul-Majeed Rufai said the network does not take lightly to fraud issues and has embarked on several interventions to educate customers.

“Fraud is a big issue everywhere you go. There are people who are always trying to find ways to entice people to send them money. For us at MTN, we take fraud very seriously.

“We have done engagement sessions with the media and the police to brief them on the cases, the occurrence and the modus operandi of the fraudsters so that they can also educate the customers.

“MTN has also embarked on regional road shows trying to further educate the customers, because we believe when the customer is fully educated and fully aware of the fraud that is happening, they can best safeguard themselves”, Mr. Rufai mentioned.

Now with about 16 partner banks, MTN has developed numerous indigenous financial products aimed at improving a cash-lite Ghana.

Last year, MTN in partnership with Fidelity Bank launched the “Y’ello Save Account” which enables subscribers to earn 12% interest per annum on their mobile wallets.

The launch of the MTN MoMo Month marks six years of the network, using innovative technology to make money transfer transactions for institutions, schools, hotels, restaurants, shops and other places much more simple and convenient.

This year’s launch is celebrated under the theme “Expanding Digital Payments for Economic Transformation”.
