Simon Osei Mensah, Ashanti regional Minister

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei Mensah, has disclosed of a  worrying phenomenon in the region, where illegal miners are resorting to in-house mining in order to outwit the Operation Vanguard Taskforce.

Government in July escalated its fight against illegal mining with the deployment of a joint military and police personnel to curb the scourge.

In all 400 officers were dispatched to protect mining sites across the country.

Government also banned legal small-scale mining as part of a general crackdown on the menace.

Speaking at a recent press conference, Mr Osei Mensah noted that the measures adopted by government in the fight against the scourge has so far proved to be effective.

But, he bemoaned, “In spite of the efforts of the Operation Vanguard, it is regrettable to say that some individuals and groups still continue to engage in illegal mining operation in the night. It is even shocking to learn that some unscrupulous people have resorted to in-house mining in the Asante Akyim Central Municipality. They dig the cave in their own bedrooms.”
