GHANA,Accra,Jamestown, 2007. Fishermen in Jamestown relax before setting out into the Atlantic for a full day shift.

Some 30 persons have been arrested for engaging in illegal fishing at Gomoa Nyanyano in the Gomoah East district of the Central region.

The 30 were apprehended by their fellow fishermen in the area who are not happy with the activities of the 30 as they explain their activities destroy marine life in the area.

The 30 were caught fishing with unauthorized tools like carbide, light and the usage of unapproved nets.

They have since been handed over to the police in the area for prosecution in accordance with the fishing laws which regulates practice in the country’s territorial waters.

The ministry for fisheries over the last month has mounted surveillance in the coastal communities educating and seizing the fishing materials of recalcitrant fishermen whose activities are deemed dangerous to the fishing industry and aquatic life.
