Police in Tumu in the Upper West region have arrested three men who engaged in a shootout with them Tuesday night.

A source at the Tumu Police Station told Starr News that the three men exchanged fire with the Police when they tried to arrest them on suspicion that they were armed robbers.

The incident which occurred at Kunchoko a village near Tumu in the Sissala East district saw the police exchange fire with the suspects for several hours before they were overpowered.

According to the source, the suspects whose names have not been given blocked the Tumu-Navrongo road attacking commuters until the police was called leading to the exchange of fire.

Police in the area have been battling with robbers on the highway which is close to neighbouring Burkina Faso for a couple of months now.

So far about four suspects have been arrested in the area for their involvement in various robbery incidents.

In a related development, a police officer with the Tumu police station is reported dead after allegedly collapsing during a gym session in his home.

The deceased whose name has been given as Isaac Nyame, 43, was admitted at the Tumu hospital but died shortly after admission.
