Former Ghana international Yakubu Abubakar will be laid to rest Thursday, November 2, 2017.

Yakubu, a defensive midfielder, died at the Tema General hospital on Tuesday after a short illness.

The burial will take place at the Community 9 cemetery after Muslim prayers.

The family and sympathizers will converge at his mother’s residence at Tema Community 9 after the burial service.

Abubakar started every game as the Black Stars exited in the group stage of the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt and played in the qualifiers as Ghana reached their first World Cup that same year.

“Zapata” as he was affectionately called left Ghana at the age of 17 to join Dutch side Ajax Amsterdam where he won two league championships, in 2002 and 2004, as well as the 2002 Dutch Cup in the 2002-03 season.

Abubakar moved to Vitesse Arnhem in 2004 staying with the club for five years.

He played for Ghana at every level, having represented his nation at Under-17, Under-20 and Under-23 level.

He died at age 36 and left behind a son.
