A Ho High Court has declared the New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate for Karachi East, Mr Michael Yaw Gyato, as the winner of the 2016 parliamentary election.

Mr Gyato, who had been declared the MP for the constituency, faced a closed contest from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Mr Wisdom Gidisu, who sought to unseat him based on issues of over voting.

The High Court dismissed the application which was seeking to annul some polling station results in last year’s election and to subsequently declare him the winner of the Karachi East seat.

Gidisu was challenging six polling station results over alleged over voting.

The Court, however, indicated in its judgement that the petition to have the results of the six stations annulled had no merit since the petitioner has not been able to prove his claim.

It awarded Gh¢20,000 to Gyato, who doubles as the Deputy Minister for Water and Sanitation, and Gh¢5,000 to the 2nd Respondents – the Electoral Commission.
