The Southern select side defeated the Northern select side by 2-1 win to lift the giant trophy in the Alhaji Aliu Mahama Memorial Cup clash on Sunday.

Medeama midfielder Kwasi Donsu scored first with a brilliant volley under 17 minutes to end the first half in favour of the Southern Sector side.

Kotoko sensational attacker Sadick Adams restored the lead just 3 minutes after the break to restore hope in the Northern Sector side of a brilliant afternoon.

But Hearts of Oak forward, Kwame Kizito intelligently made use of a sexy pass from Patrick Razak to restore the lead for the Southern Sector side with 15 minutes to end proceedings.

The Northern Sector side were made to pay dearly for the numerous chances they missed in the first half which could have seen both Sadick Adams and Hans Kwofie scoring hat tricks each, if they had taken their chances.

The shine of the afternoon was nearly taken away when Southern Sector goalie Philimon McCarthy was given the marching orders for a second yellow card for time wasting.

The game which was part of activities to honour the late Vice President of Ghana, Alhaji Aliu Mahama for his selfless contribution to the development of sports failed to live up to the hype after both sides paraded brilliant players from the Ghana Premier League.

For their prize, the Southern Sector side were handed a giant trophy and an cash amount of GHC 50,000.

The game which was played at the newly christened Alhaji Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium was the final event used to commemorate the five years departure of the late Vice President and the renaming of the beautiful Tamale edifice.
