Students of Islamic Girls Senior High School in Suhum in the Eastern region now dine under the scorching sun following a windstorm which ripped off the makeshift dining hall on Friday.

No casualty was recorded during the storm which caused severe damage to the roof of the dining hall.

Osman Kotey, supply officer in the school narrating the incident to Starr News said, it started as a windstorm which became worse when it started raining.

He said the entire roof began shaking creating panic among the cooks in a kitchen very close to the dining hall.

Management of the School were compelled to temporarily roof the stalled dining hall project following the exponential rise in the school’s population as a result of the Free Senior High School policy.

At the time of visit, students were writing their end of term examination but the Assistant Headmaster of the Islamic Girls Senior High School, Ebenezer Tawiah told Starr News that the incident has inconvenienced about 1,350.

According to him, the students are compelled to eat under the sun until the school gets help.

Islamic Girls SHS is the only Islamic second cycle institution in the Eastern region. The school despite its impressive academic performance, is faced with several infrastructural challenges.

The affected dining hall and a three-storey 18-unit classroom block are being constructed through internally generated funds but has stalled due to insufficient funds as a result of the prohibition of PTA and other levies by government due to the free SHS programme.
