The National Identification Authority (NIA) will begin registration and issuance of Ghana Cards in the Greater Accra region today, May 28, 2018.

The registration will start with officials of the Jubilee House, Parliament, the Judiciary and the Security Services before opening registration to the general public.

The National Identification Authority (NIA) has recruited and trained 2,700 commissioners of oath to operate alongside the staff of the NIA during the registration for the Ghana Card.

Only birth certificates and passports will be used as identification for the acquisition of the card, as provided for by the National Identification Amendment Law 2017 (Act 950).

The new ID card will phase out the one previously issued under the John Agyekum Kufuor era.

It comes after several postponements by the Communications Ministry.

But the Minority in Parliament is questioning the decision to roll out the exercise with limited groups.
