Medical experts in the Central region are calling for a concerted effort to end the intake of tobacco in the country.

Tobacco, according to the experts is now becoming a leading cause of some diseases in the country.

The experts explain that some seven million people die globally every year as a result of tobacco related diseases and Ghana is no exception.

The Nicotine in the tobacco according to the experts is not only addictive making it difficult for people to easily quit the habit but it also ends up destroying sensitive organs of addicts with deaths inevitable.

The medical expects are therefore calling on government to strengthen its campaign against the drug as it is not only depriving the country of a considerable number of its human resource but also finance as a lot of money is spent in fighting tobacco related diseases.

Dr. Owusu Wereko of the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital, speaking on the tobacco situation in the country and its effects said counselling services must be deepened in the country to prevent people from starting the habit as it is difficult to stop.
