A ravaging fire gutted a five room apartment at Atekyem in the New Juaben municipality of the Eastern Region on Monday, destroying properties worth thousands of Ghana cedis, a cash of GHC10,000 and engagement items.

The rooms were occupied by a catechist with Faith Congregation of the Presbyterian Church, Janet Osei Bonsu, her family and two other tenants.

The incident occurred at the absence of the catechist who had travelled to Kumasi to attend a funeral, but there was one of the occupants  in the house.

The cash and engagement items consumed by the fire belonged to a daughter of the catechist who is preparing for her wedding. The fire charred every single personal belonging in the rooms.

The cause of the fire still remains a mystery, however, officials of the Ghana National Fire Service have commenced investigations.

Theresa Nti, the landlord who is also a staff of veterinary Services told Starr News she was in her apartment watching Television with her husband when they suddenly saw thick smoke emitting from the ceiling of the catechist’s apartment.

The fire, she said, was so devastating that the only tenant who was in the room could not extinguish it, and that the fire which started in the bedroom had extended to other areas before the arrival of Fire Service Personnel.

Officials from the National Disaster Management Organizations(NADMO) were also there for assessment.
