Five people have sustained gun shot wounds at Abirem in the Birim North District of the Eastern region after the Police opened fire on demonstrators who were protesting against mining giant, Newmont Ghana.

Information gathered by Agoo FM’s Rachel Gablah indicate that the irate youth were protesting over some lands they claim have been illegally possessed by the mining company.

Gablah reports that one of the injured was in critical condition and has been transferred to the Koforidua Hospital while the rest have been rushed to a nearby clinic for treatment.

The protestors reportedly blocked roads and access routes to the community and attempted to reclaim the disputed lands, according to reports.

The demonstrators were made up of residents from the 10 communities affected by mining activities in the Birim North District.

This is not the first time that the residents have embarked on demonstrations against Newmont Ghana.

Various attempts to reach the Police Commander of Abirem have proved futile.
