The National School Feeding Secretariat has requested for an increment in the feeding grants they are entitled to.
Currently, a meal per child costs 1 Ghana cedi following an increment from 80 pesewas in January this year.
National coordinator of the program, Dr Kwame Adu Nsiah addressing stakeholders on the success of the program in Accra said “we acknowledge that the feeding grant is inadequate, and we are advocating for an increase in the feeding grant.
“However it is only the government of Ghana that is providing the feeding grant of 1 cedi per child”.
He said “as stated in our constitution it is the right of every child to have access to free basic education. However we still find children also of school going age on the streets begging for alms and this can be attributed to the fact their parents cannot afford to give them money for school, hence they drop-out and venture into all forms of labour just to make ends met”.
Enrollment for the 2018/2019 academic year is 2,848,580 pupils in 9,495 schools.
meanwhile, government has released GH¢ 129,020,705.00 to the program under the Ministry of Gender Children and Social Protection to pay caterers for the Third Term of the 2017/ 2018 academic year.
