The chaos and confusion that broke out in the NPP following the creation of two additional regions from the Northern Region is set to begin a new marathon as some supporters of the party in the Region are asking four executives, including the regional chairman, who are Gonjas and Mamprusis, to step down from office and move to their home regions to vie for positions.

This is the latest controversy to grip the party in the chaotic aftermath of the creation of new two regions from the Northern region.

The confusion has been set off by the arrest of some seven members of the party in Salaga after they attacked and destroyed party installations following the naming of Damongo as the administrative capital of the Gonjaland Savannah Region.

The supporters are making the demands for the regional chairman, Mohammed Samba and Secretary, Sulley Sambian to lay down their positions and move to the newly created North East region, where they come from and voted in favour of the creation of the Mamprusi dominated North East Region.

Same demands are made for the regional communication Director, Mohammed Issah and the deputy secretary Haruna Iddrisu, both Gonjas, to move to the Savanna Region to assist in the running of the party.

At a press conference Monday, 18 February in Tamale, the supporters said the creation of the new regions appears to be affecting the party setup in the region and likely to foment “conflicts”.

According to the group, the four executives under their portfolios played active roles in the run up to the creation of new regions, therefore allowing them to still hold positions in the Northern Region undermines the majority tribal groups of the region.

Anyars Gazale, spokesman for the NPP Northern Youth for Peace and Development, said they are appealing to all executives who are no more voters in the Northern Region, to go to their new regions and give opportunity to choose their people to occupy those positions.

Anyars, however, said, their action should not be translated to mean a vote of no confidence has been passed on the executives. He explained that it is the believe of his group that these four executives will be able to serve the party far better in the two regions.

Gazale also spoke about a petition which he claimed was sent to President Akuffo Addo by the current chairman, asking for the President’s support in other to remain in the Northern Region As chairman of the party.

In response, Anyars Gazale said he and his group would counter any efforts to allow the chairman and the other executivesto hang on to their positions in the region.

Another member of the group who spoke to Starr News said the Northern Region equally has competent members to hold these positions thus will not allow people who have changed their allegiance or votes against the region to be their leaders.

“We want the executives to go back and run there so that it increases the seats we have there and in the North here, we have quality guys who can also come out to represent the party in the region; so we are appealing to the national executives to the youth in the North here”, one supporter also told Starr News.
