The Government of Ghana has placed a temporal ban on the importation of excavators into the country.

This was contained in a transport ministry statement sighted by Starr News.

The ban takes effect from May 1, 2019.

The move, according to the statement, is part of the government’s efforts at fighting illegal mining commonly known as galamsey in Ghana.

Government believes  the temporal ban of the heavy equipment, which is a major tool in the illegal mining business, will help in the ongoing attempt to regulate the vehicle and its usage in the country.

The Custom division of the Ghana Revenue Authority has been informed of the directive, a statement from Roads Minister said.

The Akufo-Addo government has declared war on illegal mining which is believed to have caused havoc to rivers and other natural resources of the country for many years.
