have retained their CAF Champions League title following VAR controversy that took place in the second leg of the final against Wydad in Rades.

Following a 1-1 draw in the first leg, it was the hosts who took the lead in the 41st minute through Youcef Belaili; however, Wydad managed to score an equalizer through  Walid El Karti’s cross, a goal which was ruled out for offside.

Nevertheless, the replay showed El Karti was onside; thus, the goal should have stood, but, Bakari Gassama refused to consult VAR to check the goal due to technical errors in the system.

As a result, Wydad players refused to continue the game, holding on their right to resume the game only when VAR is in action.

Esperance chairman
This led to CAF president Ahmed Ahmed to enter the pitch to convince the players to resume play, however, he failed and then the referee blew his whistle to announce Esperance as the CAF Champions League winners.

Days after the game, the Moroccan Royal Football Federation have submitted a requestto the CAF, asking for the game to be replayed at a neutral venue.

And following an emergency meeting by the CAF, the results of the two legs have been nullified, and one decisive game is set to be played between the two teams, according to several reports.

Moroccan news outlet Le360 revealed that the game will take place after the 2019 AFCON at a neutral venue and behind closed doors to avoid any fan riots.

The report added that CAF have ordered the Tunisian side to return back the cup and the winning medals before the replayed final.
