Five members of the Zion Church in the Eastern region have been confirmed dead in a fatal accident with 19 others injured.

The accident occurred on Monday around 10:00am at the Akyem Engresi stretch of the Accra to Kumasi Highway in the Eastern region.

Information gathered indicates that the Church members numbering 25 onboard a Mercedes Benz Sprinter Bus with registration number GT 6856-19 were returning from a convention they attended at Akyem Osiem heading towards Ashanti Bekwai .

However, on reaching a section of the highway at the outskirt of Akyem Enyresi, the rear nearside tyre of the Bus burst resulting in the driver, Osei Kwame, 32, losing control of the steering wheel.

The vehicle skidded off the road and somersaulted into the bush by the road side.

Five of the passengers made up of two females and three males died on the spot.

The nineteen (19) other occupants sustained serious injuries and were rushed to the Enyiresi Government hospital for treatment.

Some of the injured people are in critical condition have been referred to the Eastern Regional Hospital in Koforidua.

Bodies of the deceased persons were deposited at the Chad Morgue for preservation, identification and autopsy.

The Public Relations Officer of the Eastern Regional Police Command, DSP Ebenezer Tetteh told Starr News that the accident vehicle has been towed and impounded at the Police station as police commences investigation.
