The police on Sunday arrested a Burkina Faso national with a loaded handgun during church service at a Roman Catholic Church at Hamile in the Upper West region.

The 55-year-old suspect was picked up after the church members raised alarm over his suspicious behavior, the police said.

According to the Upper West Regional police commander DCOP Okyere Buah-Appiah, the suspect said he has been in Hamile in the past six weeks and was attending Church service for the first time in the area.

“He was unable to tell why be brought a gun to church,” the police boss said.

The suspect whose name is being withheld has been detained at the Police District Headquarters in Jirapa in the Upper West Region.

Ghana is currently on high terror alert following insurgencies in neighbouring Burkina Faso.

The security agencies have met the leadership of religious organisations to enhance the security at their premises and their members.
