With the Welsh-based outfit looking like heading to the abyss, manager Steve Cooper quickly brought on Ayew in place of Kristoffer Peterson.
The substitution worked to perfection after the Ghana skipper drew them level with eight minutes from time before George Byers’ put the Swans ahead soon after.
Ayew completed his brace with another headed effort at the death to ensure Swansea progressed into round two.
The goal was Ayew’s first goal for the club in more than three years.
He spent last season on loan at Fenerbahce and had been expected to leave the club this summer.
Meanwhile the victory ensured the Swans remain unbeaten under their current head coach while it was the second time in three matches that Cooper’s troops have come from behind to win this season.
