The two officers were arrested by the police during the live hearing

Two finance officers from the Sefwi Akontombra Assembly have been arrested on the orders of the chairman of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) James Klutse Avedzi during a live broadcast of sitting Monday.

The arrest order was given after the committee found anomalies in some vouchers they presented and reasons for the expenditure.

The two – a former finance officer for the assembly  Isaac Akowaah and his successor James Esilfie- were taken to the Parliament police station where their statements were taken.

Giving the order Mr Avedzi said: “You want to hold the committee to ransom; that the two of [connived] to try and deceive this committee…we are going to lock you up.”

“The police will take a statement from you and that statement will be used against you in the law court. We [the Public Accounts Committee] will not prosecute you. [Instead] The government will take over [this case],” Mr. Avedzi said.

The committee is probing expenditure by the various assemblies in 2016 as captures by the Auditor General report.
