A farmer has been shot dead by a Fulani herdsman at Afram Plains South District of the Eastern Region.

The incident occurred at Gyaneboafo, a farming community under Bonkro Electoral area.

The body of the deceased has been retrieved by the Police for preservation and autopsy at the Presbyterian Hospital in Donkorkrom.

The deceased and his two brothers were reportedly pursuing to arrest the suspect after his cattle destroyed their harvested tubers yam.

The deceased, a Dagomba, from the Nothern Region was on a visit to his brother-owner of the farm.

Assembly Member for Bonkro Electoral Area, Jordan Yunbow Michael narrated the incident to Starr News that”..when he got to the farm there were a lot of cattle destroying the yams including the ones they have harvested to sell. So he called his two brothers to rush to the farm to help him arrest the fulani herdman so that he pays for the damages. Thinking that they were going to arrest this man,not knowing he had a gun which he shot at the deceased killing him instantly”

He added “We can also react but because of peace. If we should do something today Ghanaians will say there is law but where was this same law when we asked for protection to drive these people away.Now our brother jas been shot dead if we say we are going to retaliated they will tell you there is law. it is only in Ghana that these things can happen not even Togo can this thing happen”

According to the Assembly Member,the District Police Commander led a team of investigators to the community making effort to arrest the suspect now at large, hence asked the angry farmers planning to retaliate to remain calm.

There is a feud between farmers and herders in the Afram Plains South Area over destruction farms and crops as well as pollution of water bodies by cattle of the herdsmen.

Aframsu, Kwame boye, Makofi  Charity, Bonkro, Tease among others.

Population of Cattle has increased in the area due to influx of herdsmen seeking refuge after fleeing from insecure places such as Sekyere Afram Plains and Asante Akyem Agogo.

Two weeks ago, some farmers in the area threatened to take the laws into their own hands to fight the herdsmen should the security fails to flush out the herders and their cattle.

Following Starr News report, a joint team of Military and National Security was dispatched to some of the troubled communities for a two-day operation which led to killing of dozens of cattle.

Leadership of the herdsmen in Afram Plains claim, about 500 cattle were killed during the operation while some herdsmen sustained gunshot wounds.

The Chief of Fulanis in Donkorkrom,Idrisu Sambo claimed out of the number, 40 of the cows killed by the military belonged to him.
