Acres of green plantation at Danyame in the Kumasi metropolis of the Ashanti region has been destroyed over the weekend.

The land which stretches from the Miklin Hotel junction, through to some homes and offices behind the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council, was seen lying fallow after a supposed three-day exercise.

A visit to the area on Sunday by Ultimate FM’s Patricia Ama Bonsu saw some men busily shredding into pieces most of the palm trees that had been pulled down by caterpillars.

The land which has the Subin river running through it served as one of the major flashpoints in checking perennial flooding in Danyame and its environs.

It is unclear if the land has been sold out or leased for private development or otherwise.

On September 27, 2019, members of international non-governmental environmental organisation, A Rocha Ghana planted some 500 species of trees in the affected area to support the fight against climate change.

On the said day, petitions were sent to both the Mayor of Kumasi and the Ashanti Regional Minister respectively to support the youth climate action.
