The Member of Parliament for New Juaben South, Dr. Mark Assibey Yeboah has called on Ghanaians to sustain the practice of frequent hand washing with soap beyond the Coronavirus pandemic to help reduce the spread of diseases.

According to the Lawmaker, hands are the principal carriers of disease-causing germs therefore many common and life-threatening illnesses that affect Ghanaians would reduce drastically if hand hygiene practice improves.

He explained that, many illnesses begin when hands are contaminated with disease-causing viruses and bacteria mostly after contacting human excreta, shaking contaminated hands, touching infectious surfaces and fomites.

He said frequent hand washing is the most cost-effective basic disease prevention regime necessary for improving the health of the citizenry.

“We must sustain and consolidate gains made in the area of frequent hand washing with soap under running water beyond COVID-19 and make it a habit because many diseases could be prevented with this basic daily practice”. He said.

Dr Assibey Yeboah who is Chairman of the Finance and Agriculture Committees in Parliament and Member of the Economic Management Team of government said this when he Presented quantities of Veronica Hand washing Buckets, alcohol-based hand sanitizers, Liquid soaps and Tissue Papers to market women in Five Markets and drivers in Four lorry stations in the New Juaben South Constituency on Monday, April 6, 2020.

Statistics by UNICEF indicate that 40 per cent of the World’s Population, or 3 billion people, do not have a handwashing facility with Water and Soap at home. Nearly three-quarters of the people in the least developed countries lack basic handwashing facilities at home. In Sub-Sahara Africa, 63% of people in urban areas, or 258 million people, lack access to hand washing.

The Coronavirus Pandemic has increased global awareness on the effectiveness of frequent hand washing with soap under running water in preventing infections.

The Lawmaker urged his constituents to make hand hygiene practice a habit.

He pledged his commitment to ensuring that New Juaben South constituency becomes a model of hand hygiene practice in Ghana to help improve the wellbeing of the people.
