The Africa Center for Parliamentary Affairs (ACEPA) has described as disturbing what it says is the conflicting information from the legislature over COVID-19 infections in the House.

According to them, the current situation will cast credibility challenges for the legislature while underscoring the need for parliament to adopt virtual proceedings.

Speaking to Starr News, the Executive Director for (ACEPA) Dr. Rashid Draman said: “We are finding it difficult to know exactly what is coming out of parliament and who is telling us the truth and who is not telling us the truth”.

He added that it is important that representatives of the House ensure that there is transparency and accountability in their operations.

“I have seen many parliaments adopting the virtual proceedings or where it is not possible they find a way to rotate the numbers of the members to come into the house at a time,” he said.

He appealed to parliament to control their numbers in order to ensure social distancing protocol is observed.

It comes after Parliament denied reports that two MPs and 13 parliamentary staff have tested positive for the viral disease.

Parliament had said results of the mass testing currently ongoing are not yet known.

However, an MP and Member of leadership of the House has confirmed that some of his colleagues have tested positive for the virus.

Asawase MP Muntaka Mubarak has confirmed the number of infections in the house, adding that the affected persons have been isolated.
