The division one league board has proposed some punitive measures to be used against clubs that allow their fans to assault referees during match days.

The board in an emergency meeting held on Monday, March 30, 2021 to address the assault on four referees by Bono-based Mighty royals fans in a league game against Bofoakwa Tano proposed to the GFA to deduct points from clubs whose fans assault referees or engage in hooliganism and also deploy the military instead of police at match venues.

Speaking to Starr Sports, member of Division league Board Sheik Tophic Sienu said his outfit believes the banning of match venues of clubs whose fans misbehave during games is not deterrent enough.

He is confident the GFA will consider their proposal on how to handle these acts of barbarism by clubs and their supporters on referees.

“We saw it necessary to organize an emergency meeting and then come up with some measures that will help curtain some of these issues going on in the league. We believe that the banning of match venues is a good punishment but perhaps the clubs are not feeling the punishment. It is not punitive enough.

“Why am I saying this, we have recorded assault cases in several league games in Division and this same punishment of banning home venue is meted out to these clubs whose fans misbehave and still we are not seeing any change”.

“So we have proposed to the Executive committee of the GFA that instead of banning match venues, clubs should lose points for infecting such act of barbarism on referees,” he told Starr Sports.

“One other thing we also want done is that it appears the police are too friendly with the people wherever there is a match.

“So you see the police will be at the stadium alright and these acts still go on. So we propose that especially in the zone one which we have described as a hot zone, there should be military officers deployed at match venues instead of police to instill discipline and we believe these proposals tabled can bring some change,” Sheik Tophic Sienu added.
