Eleven persons died on the spot following an accident that occurred on the Yapei–Tamale highway in the Savannah region.

The accident involving a DAF Tipper truck with registration number NR 578 F and a Toyota minibus with registration number AS 2872-20 is reported to have happened Tuesday night at Alipe, near Yapei.

The Toyota minibus had eighteen passengers on board travelling from Tamale to Kumasi while the Tipper truck loaded with sea sand was heading to Tamale from Yapei.

A police situational report said the driver of the Toyota minibus identified as Akonsi Sumaila, who is now deceased, veered off his lane and collided head-on with the DAF tipper truck.

The eleven persons on board the Toyota minibus that died comprised nine male adults, a female adult, and a child including the driver. The remaining five sustained various degrees of injuries.

The injured persons are currently receiving treatment at the Tamale Teaching Hospital whilst the bodies of the deceased have also been deposited at the morgue of the same facility pending an autopsy.

Police in the Savannah region say it is investigating the cause of the accident.
