President Akufo-Addo has called on the private sector to take advantage of the huge business opportunities that currently exist in the waste management sector of the country.
Commissioning some one hundred (100) Waste Management Trucks and twenty-five (25) disinfection trucks at the Independence Square as part of a public-private partnership between the Government of Ghana and Zoomlion limited, President Akufo-Addo said “rapid population growth with its consequent increase in human activities at the residential, commercial and industrial levels has meant that waste generation activities continue to be a challenge in the country”. This challenge the President says has created a business opportunity that the private sector must take advantage of.
“Currently in total, we generate some seven million, five hundred and seventeen thousand, five hundred and forty (7,517,540) metric tonnes of waste. This situation you will agree presents enormous investment opportunities for which the private sector can take advantage” President Akufo-Addo said.
“I will therefore reiterate my invitation for more private sector companies to collaborate with government in creating business opportunities in the waste management space such as waste to energy, materials recovery, recycling and composting” President Akufo-Addo added.

Executive Chairman of the Jospong Group (owners of Zoomlion), Dr. Joseph Agyepong in a brief statement said the 100 state-of-the-art compactor trucks and disinfection equipment which constitute part of a total of 500 trucks expected to arrive in Ghana with modern technology and well-trained drivers, will boost Zoomlion’s already existing fleet of waste management trucks.
“The expectation is that this would culminate in improved sanitation. Your Excellency, I am happy to announce that fifty (50) women are also being trained together with our men at the Ghana Armed Forces Supplies and Transport Training School on defensive driving and effective operation of the trucks” Dr. Joseph Agyepong said.
“As we work towards a clean Ghana, we must all commit to the vision of the President. We must also support existing initiatives such as the Environmental Care Campaign by the Church of Pentecost, the Chief Imam’s Campaign on Cleanliness as well as projects by Civil Society Groups, the Graphic Communications Group and other media partners. We are also pleading with the local authorities that the sanitation courts work to enforce discipline among the citizens” the Executive Chairman of Jospong Group added.
