Former Finance Minister, Dr Kwabena Duffuor, has called on members of the National Democratic Congress, (NDC) to work towards attaining at least 40 per cent of total votes in the Ashanti Region in the 2024 elections.

Speaking on GHONE TV on Monday, Dr Duffuor described claims that the Ashanti region is anti-NDC as propaganda, adding that previous NDC governments have delivered more developments in the region than any other government in power.

Dr Duffuor who is also the founder of HODA Holdings said only the late President Jerry John Rawlings garnered 33 per cent of total votes in the region in 1996, reason why the NDC must work hard to poll over 40 per cent votes in the Ashanti region in the next election.

The former governor of the Bank of Ghana explained to host Serwaa Amihere that the NPP has made progress in traditional NDC strongholds but the NDC has failed to make any significant progress in the Ashanti and Eastern regions.

“Ashantis like NDC, it is just propaganda that Ashantis do not like the NDC…Rawlings is the only NDC candidate that polled 33 per cent in Ashanti region…in 2024, We will target 40 per cent of votes in Ashanti to stop the break the eight, it [Break the eight] will not happen.”

Dr Duffuor, however, failed to confirm or deny reports that he is seeking to challenge former President John Mahama for the flagbearer slot of the NDC ahead of the 2024 elections.

According to him, he declined former President Rawlings’ advice to vie for the flagbearership slot of the party in 2018.
