The Ghana Athletics Association organised their 3rd Zonal circuit in Koforidua over the weekend as part of preparations for the upcoming commonwealth games. The championship saw over 100 athletes from the Eastern Region, Ashanti region and Volta Competing in both track and field events.
The competition is to help the GAA unearth talents for the National team and also serve as preparations for top athletes for the upcoming Commonwealth games and other major tournaments.
Rosemary Arthur of Ghana Armed Forces came first in the women 1500m race with a time of 4:58.36secs. In the Men’s javelin Benjamin Numo also of Ghana Armed Forces came first with a throw of 58.08m.
Comfort Otubea of Ghana Prison Service came first in the women Javelin with a throw of 34.16m
Winners from the Zonal circuits will Compete in the National Championship in May.
Second Vice president of the Ghana Athletics Association, Charles Osei Assibey revealed to Starr FM the Circuits are to help local athletes be competitive ahead of international competitions.
“The rational for putting together the circuits is to make sure that we create competition for all the athletes. It is also to make sure that we are able to unearth young talent. For the Pro-athletes, we are creating competition for them ahead of major events otherwise they will sit the whole year without competing” he told Starr FM Sports.
The Ghana Athletics Association is one of the deciplines to represent Ghana at this year’s commonwealth games in Birmingham.
