Senior Staff Association of public Universities have declared strike becoming the latest in the string of industrial action by labour unions in the country.

The strike was declared Thursday afternoon at a press conference held at the University of Ghana campus in Accra.

According to the Association, the action is due to the government’s refusal to extend the generic allowances to all senior staff of public universities, and granting them the proposed 20% Cost-of-Living Allowance (COLA).

The group mentioned the failure by government to pay the accrued interest on tier-2 pension arrears from 2010-2016. They said the situation has led to the death of some of their members.

Addressing the media, the National chairman for Senior Staff Association-Universities of Ghana, Isaac Donkor said they won’t return to work until their concerns are addressed.

“Universities in Ghana everybody if you know you are a senior staff, go home from here and sleep,” he stated.
