Former President John Dramani Mahama has reacted to President Akufo-Addo’s call on African leaders in relation to begging from the West.

President Nana Akufo-Addo during the opening of the US-Africa Leaders’ Summit in Washington DC. said that African countries must wean themselves off “begging” the West to earn global respect and change poor perceptions about the continent.

“If we stop being beggars and spend African money inside the continent, Africa will not need to ask for respect from anyone, we will get the respect we deserve. If we make it prosperous as it should be, respect will follow,” Mr Akufo-Addo said.

But the 2020 NDC Flagbearer said it’s laughable to see President Akufo-Addo pontificate about begging when he’s “reduced the country to a beggar nation.”

“We have a President who enjoys spouting the rhetorics of self-respect and restraint from begging western nations for support, yet he has spent the last several weeks on the telephone with western leaders asking them to beg the IMF to grant Ghana the recently announced staff-level agreement for an extended credit facility,” he told Delegates on Saturday during the NDC’s 10th Delegates Congress at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Meanwhile, he urged the NDC to strive to win the next election by merit and not default.

“Ghanaians are looking up to us not to become the next government by default as a result of the failure of this administration, Ghanaians are looking up to us to be the choice because we are a better alternative.

“We must not win by default of the lapses of this administration, but we must win because we are the better alternative to govern this country,” Mr Mahama noted.
