Government’s controversial debt exchange programme has been extended further for the third time after heightening agitations by stakeholders.

The Finance Ministry disclosed that the extension is to make way for stakeholder engagement.

“Pending further stakeholder engagement with institutional and individual investors, recently invited to join the debt exchange programme, government is extending the expiration of the DDE to Jan 31, 2023,” the Finance Ministry tweeted a while ago.

Meanwhile, the Minority leader, Haruna Iddrisu has shot down the extension of the deadline for the debt exchange program by government arguing nothing short of suspension is what is required.

“Instead of telling Ghanaians that they have suspended the debt exchange, they are announcing a second extension to 31st January. It won’t help them! Let them be told that it won’t help them. They should suspend it, thoroughly engage and consult, call an emergency economic crisis, bring together heads and experts in the economic management.

“The consequences ahead of Ghana is dire should we fail to get executive approval of the IMF between April and June…” he said at a Press conference today.
