The Member of Parliament for Tema West, Carlos Ahenkorah has slammed Parliament for failing to grant tax exemptions to a number of companies under the 1 District 1 Factory Initiative.

According to the MP, the development is gravely affecting such companies. Parliament in 2021 rejected the over 150 tax exemptions arguing the country needed such resources to tackle the economic crisis.

The speaker then referred the requests for waivers and exemptions to the Finance Committee for further scrutiny.

A few weeks ago, Minister for Trade and Industry, K.T Hammond was in parliament to lament over the development.

Speaking during the presentation of the last business statement before the house rises, the former deputy Trade and Industry Minister questioned parliament’s silence on the matter.

Majority chief whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh explained the passage of the Tax Exemptions Bill has made it more difficult to grant tax waivers.

Minority Chief Whip Governs Kwame Agbodza questioned what has become of the previous exemptions granted to companies and individuals. According to the Adaklu MP projects such as Pullman Hotel have stalled after parliament granted tax exemption requests.

Minority leader Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson further refuted claim parliament was deliberately failing to approve the tax waiver requests.

According to him such billions of cedis cannot be allowed to go to waste in the name of exemptions.
