The deputy ranking member on the Education Committee, Dr. Clement Apaak has questioned the exorbitant accommodation fees for University students in the country.

This comes on the back of the released approved hostels rates by the Ghana Hostels Limited for 2023/2024 academic year.

The document captured as high as Ghc35,320.00 for a room with AC and Ghc4,928.00  for four in a room.

Commenting on the development, the lawmaker is calling for a national conversation on the hostel facilities for University students.

“Exorbitant to put it mildly. How many parents can afford to pay these outrageous amounts for hostel accommodation for their wards? What happens to the poor? Information is that it’s the same in other Universities.

“We need a national conversation on accommodation for students,” Dr. Clement Apaak stated.

Though the University of Ghana is making strides to improve student accommodation on campus there are still some hostels charging huge amounts from students.
