Minister for Trade and Industry, Alan Kyerematen

Political marketing strategist, Prof. Kobby Mensah says the withdrawal of former Trade Minister, Alan Kyerematen from the NPP Presidential race is a surprise and an indictment on the governing party.

Alan Kyerematen who came third in the party’s Super delegates conference on August 26, 2023, stated among others that he was withdrawing from the contest among other things due to the intimidation of his agents.

He added that the Special Delegates conference was tactically skewed in favour of one of particular aspirants.

Speaking on News Night on GHOne TV, Prof. Kobby Mensah said the withdrawal of Alan Kyerematen from the contest is an indictment on the governing party that prides itself as a collective.

“I think this is an indictment on the NPP’s processes especially a party that prides itself as a due process party. A party that prides itself as a collective. Don’t forget former President Kufuor used to say that we have the men, he had always referred to the party’s collective nature. Unfortunately, this party is gradually deteriorating, and it is becoming too personality centered and which is why we are actually seeing this.

If you listen to Alan’s statement, he makes reference to party structures which are deliberately skewed towards favouring a particular candidate in the race. So, for me, it was absolutely not foreseeing, I didn’t anticipate this coming. Of course, the campaign team had a lot of concerns which I thought the party was going to deal with especially when they set up a committee to deal with the aftermath of the super delegates conference. Clearly, they were not interested in anything other than Ken Agyapong’s outburst against the President and Vice President which was a shame. Continuously we’ve seen Alan strongly coming against the party’s structures for intimidations against his people and he has consistently been pointing out cycle after cycle when the party’s delegates have gone for elections of this nature and they have treated his backers with a very unfair treatment. So, he has been very consistent over the years for backing his supports and saying that he does not tolerate such treatment of his supporters.”
