The Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has stated that top management officials of the Volta River Authority (VRA) should be sacked over the havoc the spillage has caused residents.

Speaking on Morning Starr with Francis Abban Tuesday October 17, 2023, the lawmaker stated that the top management officials of the VRA cannot absolve themselves from the mess the spillage has caused communities.

“I don’t know why the top management of VRA is still at post, it is an affront that they are still at post. How they totally mismanaged people with the spillage, how they treated the people with contempt. Even as a Member of Parliament no call, no engagement. And they tell us that some months ago they did a simulation. Simulation is to prepare people for disasters in the future.

“When you are actually about to carry out the spillage, the people should know. That September 12 statement they issued very late in the day which doesn’t say much. It doesn’t tell us exactly what is going to happen. We were not forthright with that. It is a total disaster, Mr. Ablakwa stated.

He continued: “They know that they owe the people a duty of care. Where were their officials, their safety department? We want to see the plans they made for our people. Where were they, in making sure that they engage the community and making sure that we are out of harm’s way. We have relocated to higher grounds before they start the spillage.”

Several Communities around the Volta Lake have been submerged in water, displacing many residents.

Flooding due to the spillage from the Akosombo Dam has forced many communities in the North, South, and Central Tongu districts of the Volta Region to evacuate, leaving them with no choice but to try and save what’s left of their belongings.

Experts also fear the current insanitary conditions created by spillage of the dams could create a public health crisis if proper steps are not taken immediately to address the problem.
